CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Kirby
Age: ~12-13
Canon: Kirby
Canon Point: post-Star Allies
Character Information: Here!
Personality:
A brave warrior with a big heart and an even bigger stomach, Kirby is the protagonist and titular character of the series.
First and foremost: the meme about Kirby being shaped like a friend is grounded in truth. Kirby is a friend. Whose friend? E v e r y o n e ‘ s! Kirby is very driven to help others, even if they’re strangers, and will drop everything to assist someone in need (like Ribbon in Crystal Shards, the stage allies in DL3, the People of the Sky in Triple Deluxe, and Eline in Rainbow Curse) or help solve a problem (like the star rod being stolen in Adventure).
To this end, he has gone on many interstellar adventures and saved multiple planets (and in the case of Star Allies, even the galaxy itself!) He is an extremely brave little guy and goes up against death-defying odds and cosmic horrors on the regular without batting an eye with the assistance of his Copy Abilities that allow him to transform into a variety of forms. Naturally, he won’t have those powers here. He’ll just be a squishy human. It’ll take some getting used to. Once he gets his monster powers he’ll take advantage of those, of course, but in the meantime he will likely continue to act courageously in spite of being depowered, throwing himself into the fray to help others even if it means putting himself at risk.
That said, while Kirby is a problem-solving hero, he is also rather reckless and impulsive and can be a little stubborn and one-track-minded. There are actually multiple cases of him either directly or indirectly causing the problems he ends up solving. In Squeak Squad, he literally barges into Dedede’s castle assuming that the King stole his cake (which tbh is not an unfair assumption given the king’s history of food stealing) with no warning. When that’s a bust, he begins pursuing the Squeaks after deducing they must be the culprits. In his dogged pursuit and through a series of misunderstandings, he actually ends up accidentally releasing an ancient evil (the final boss!). He also stubbornly insisted on taking the star rod to the Fountain of Dreams in Adventure, despite Dedede’s protest, which unleashed Nightmare (again, the final boss) on Dream Land.
In addition to being a very Good Samaritan motivated just by his kind heart, Kirby is also sometimes prompted to action by less noble and more personal means. He is, for example, extremely, extremely food motivated. The best example of this is the fact that the entire plot of Squeak Squad is literally “someone stole Kirby’s cake and neither man nor god can get in the way of him getting it back.” Not even an exaggeration. He has been known to lose interest in things when food isn’t involved (see ch. 1 of the first novel) and let it drive his decision-making, which ties back into the earlier mention of being rather one-track-minded. One could even argue that the reason Kirby got involved in the plot of Kirby’s Dream Land was more immediately because the food was stolen, with helping the other residents of Dream Land as a bonus.
So Kirby is sometimes a hero and sometimes a liability, but he is always your friend. Kirby sees the best in everyone and wants to be everyone’s friend. He has rose-colored glasses and a very innocent, child-like worldview. Like a child, he is easily distracted (see: him derailing a conversation to talk about parfaits to the point they forget what they were originally discussing in the novels) and can be a little immature and dense (see the audio dramas where he starts poking and shouting at an unconscious waddledee (one HE knocked unconscious) and asking them why they won’t wake up.) He is extremely trusting, at times to a fault. There are multiple times in canon where he is tricked by others he considered friends/allies (Marx and Magolor being the most noteworthy) to the point that fans having trust issues is sort of a running joke/assumption whenever a new ally is introduced in a game (like Elfilin in Forgotten Land).
Despite being taken advantage of multiple times, Kirby remains very forgiving and is not one to hold grudges. In fact, basically all of his recurring allies were at one point or another villains, such as MetaKnight and the aforementioned traitor Magolor. Part of this is, of course, Kirby’s accepting nature but I also think that that welcoming kindness rubs off on other people. Even his most recurring foe, the selfish King Dedede, has softened to the pink ball over the years and the two have developed something of a rival bromance that sees them helping and looking out for one another (see: his tsundere display in Kirby 64, his excitement about reuniting with Kirby in Subspace Emissary, and his slightly cowardly assistance in Triple Deluxe.)
Basically, unless you’re actively hurting his friends or his world, Kirby is probably pretty glad to meet you/see you!
